After completing 2 years of my course and commencing my one years
work experience in 1995, with Relay, I was offered the opportunity of full-time
employment with the company.
After careful consideration of the advantages to be gained from professional
experience as opposed to an academic qualification, I decided to accept the
offer and postpone the completion of my degree. This decision has proven to
have had a positive influence on my career path and I am now a confident and
experienced computer professional.

Senior Web and Applications Developer

Seeking further career advancement, I decided to accept a job with Vision. Their international profile and experience in large-scale web and application development offered more personal development and experience opportunities.
My initial role included designing and developing high profile dynamic web sites and applications for local businesses, while offering my consultancy skills during the analysis stage. At the beginning of 2002 I moved on to a large project to develop a scalable, SOAP-based, COM+ WAN application and later assumed the role as technical lead.
In 2003 I moved in to a team responsible for developing .NET intranet applications for our customers in the banking and financial sectors. This gave me exposure to new and emerging technologies, and allowed me to further improve my development standards and practises.

Full-Time Developer

My main role, in the beginning, was as a COBOL programmer, which
involved developing and supporting the Insurance Broker software - the largest
selling product of the company.
A chance for advancement came when I was asked to become one of a two man team
who would be responsible for converting the COBOL & Unix based Insurance
Broker software to a Visual Basic & Windows product. My position within the
company was strengthened further when I was appointed the Team Leader for the
Windows development team.
When the company decided to start providing internet solutions I was the
obvious choice to spearhead the development due to my already extensive web
development skills and adaptability. I was solely responsible for the initial
design and development of their successful online motor and household insurance
solutions.

Both mental and physical fitness are very important to me and this
is reflected in the way I spend my spare time.
Due to my chosen career path I spend a lot of my free time extending and fine
tuning my computer knowledge and keeping up to date with the rapidly changing
world of development.
I have also run a number of web sites over the last few years, including game
community sites and code sites, and I have written a number of articles for a
popular game network site. A full list of sites and articles can be found on my
personal web site.
My most recent web site has a constantly growing user base of over 14,000 members, receives over 10,000 visitors a day and usually has 150 users active at any one time. The site consists of static and user-driven dynamic data, and provides a place for the players to discuss the game. You can find the site at: http://www.swgcraft.com/
On the physical side, you can usually find me hanging from a cliff or climbing
wall on the end of a long rope.
